The Argentinian elections: Javier Milei and his chainsaw politics

Sofia Cigolini

In the aftermath of his resounding victory in the Argentine elections, the enigmatic figure known as the "chainsaw candidate," or the Argentine Trump, el Loco, is gearing up to lead the nation with a turbo-capitalist agenda. His platform boldly confronts political correctness and issues a fiery promise to set the Central Bank ablaze, attributing Argentina's inflation to what he perceives as a financial monster.

Within the confines of his home, the president-elect, Miley, proudly introduces his six male canine companions, all genetically cloned from his dearly departed dog Astino, who left this world in 2017. Strikingly, Miley claims to maintain communication with Astino through a Medium. Renowned for his distinctive approach on the campaign trail, often wielding a genuine chainsaw, Miley symbolizes a commitment to dismantle bureaucratic barriers, slash taxes, and champion ideals closely aligned with the political right.

As Argentina enters this new chapter under Miley's leadership, it faces challenges of unprecedented proportions. With inflation soaring to a staggering 143% in the past year and 40% of the population living below the poverty line, the expectations on Miley to effect substantial change are sky-high. Surprising many, Miley secured victory in the runoff with a commanding 56% of the vote, defeating his center-left opponent Sergio Massa, the former Minister of Economy in the outgoing government.

While Miley's message resonated with citizens seeking a departure from the status quo, the political landscape presents hurdles. Miley's party holds a scant number of seats in the Argentine congress, necessitating negotiations with political rivals, some of whom engaged in heated contention during the election campaign.

Adding a layer of complexity to Miley's presidency is his choice of Vittorio Villarrealpower as an advisor, a figure known for defending individuals convicted of crimes against humanity. Miley has further stirred controversy by proposing the closure of a museum dedicated to the disappeared victims during the military dictatorship of '76-'83. This decision raises poignant questions about Miley's own past, coming from a family with military ties.

In essence, Miley's ascent to the presidency not only signifies an uncertain future for Argentina but also prompts a profound reflection on its historical narrative. As the nation braces for change, the chainsaw-wielding leader holds the keys to navigating both the complexities of the present and the shadows of the past.
