“A man is a man and a woman is a woman”: Sunak’s lesson about gender identities in latest speech

Audrija Dutta

“We shouldn't get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be - they can't. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That's just common sense.”, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak noted on October 4th during his closing speech at the Conservative Party Conference.

Sunak’s statement concerning hospitals coincided with Health Secretary Steve Barclay’s announcement during his speech at the Conservative Party’s conference. Barclay assured that trans patients would no longer be treated in gender-segregated hospital wards, a policy change divergent from the NHS's practice of accommodating trans individuals in wards corresponding to their gender identity since 2021, as reported by the BBC.

Sunak’s criticism about ‘virtue signalling’ in the speech signals a more rightist stance of his Conservative Party, further claiming that it has ‘replaced common sense’ in the public sector. The speech focused on a string of major announcements including the scrapping of the HS2 rail line, a program to double the number of doctors and nurses in the health industry, and raising the age of smoking in the country. However, the distinctly regressive and transphobic remark makes us wonder: should a privileged man at this position of power, authority and influence over the public really oversimplify and trivialise the complexities of gender identities?

Sunak's words perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the marginalisation of transgender people. By denying the legitimacy of diverse gender identities, he fosters an environment where discrimination and prejudice are not only tolerated but also validated. It only shows a lack of understanding and ignorance towards a major minority community.

Sunak's speech, far from being an isolated incident, highlights the pressing need for education and empathy within the corridors of political power. These comments only mark more potential threats towards transgender individuals and their security in the United Kingdom.
